Frequently Asked Questions

What is Photorejuvenation? Photorejuvenation uses a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL®) treatments at a frequency that targets pigmented cells. This process uses light which passes harmlessly and painlessly through the skin and is absorbed by lesions and spots. Healthy tissue is unaffected, while the abnormal cells are destroyed. IPL® also stimulates the growth of collagen, filling in acne scars, decreasing pore size and giving the skin a youthful and radiant appearance. What does the treatment consist of? First, the skin is prepared with a thorough cleansing. A gel is then prepared and placed on the skin, which is then treated with the light. After the treatment, the gel is cleaned off, and sunscreen is applied. Patients can apply a cold compress if needed. What are the benefits of Photorejuvenation? The benefits of Photorejuvenation are that downtime is minimal, and the treatment itself is quick. Photorejuvenation gives the patient’s skin a youthful, radiant, and healthy appearance. It decreases blemishes of the skin such as acne scars, brown spots, wrinkles and redness from rosacea. How many treatments are required? The typical treatment is a series of 3 to 5 treatments. These treatments are performed at 3 to 4 week intervals for the purpose of healing. Depending on the individual case, some may be satisfied with the results from 2 or 3 sessions. Is Photorejuvenation safe? Yes, Photorejuvenation is safe, quick, and effective, with little to no risk. Are there any possible side effects? For a couple hours after treatment, you may experience a sunburned appearance. The spots that have been targeted by the treatment will temporarily appear darker before disappearing. These spots will flake off in a couple of days. Photorejuvenation may cause some temporary blistering, swelling, pigmentation changes, or stunted hair growth. In rare occasions, infection, unwanted pigmentation changes, and scarring may occur. What conditions respond best to this treatment? Photorejuvenation targets age-spots, freckles, sun spots, enlarged pores, and rosacea. Will there be any downtime? No, your normal routine will not be interrupted. Patients can even apply makeup if desired. What can be expected post-treatment? Post-treatment, there may be minimal swelling which can be treated with a cold compress. Dark spots will flake off after 2-3 days and your skin may be sensitive. Be sure to protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen. How soon will results appear? Results appear after the first couple of treatments. How long does a Photorejuvenation treatment last? A typical session of Photorejuvenation takes about 30 minutes. Who should avoid Photorejuvenation? You should speak to Dr. Fern about any family history of skin cancer. Photorejuvenation may not be a good option for those who have a history of bleeding, bruising, severe sun sensitivity, keloid formation due to poor healing, or excessive scarring. How does the treatment feel? There is some discomfort during the treatment. Patients relate the feeling to the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin. How long do the results last? The results of this treatment are permanent, as long as you take good care of your skin. What are the limitations of Photorejuvenation? Patients who have darker skin are less likely to see results and more likely to experience negative side effects, as compared to lighter-skinned patients.
