Laser Vein Removal in Atlanta, GA

Vein & Skin Laser Center uses laser vein removal to treat spider veins for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Lumenis VascuLight™ Laser is a simple and non-invasive (no surgery or needles) procedure. It is used for the treatment of larger, deeper veins (reticular veins) as well as smaller surface veins (spider veins). This Intense Pulsed Light (IPL®) technology is exclusive to the VascuLight™ system. The veins respond to the precise energy level and wavelength of light that is used with IPL®. Because the beam targets only the hemoglobin in the vein, the process does not affect any of the surrounding skin and tissue. Over time, the diseased vein will disappear from sight.

There is virtually no downtime. Procedures can be done during your lunch hour. No needles are used at any time. You do not have to make changes to your normal activities, before or after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Laser Vein Removal?

Laser Vein Removal is a proven method for treating spider veins, as well as other unwanted vascular lesions such as rosacea and port wine stains.

How does the treatment work?

There are several different lasers available that work extremely well at treating unwanted veins, including pulsed dye, long pulsed, variable-pulsed Nd-YAG and Alexandrite. The laser emits a specialized light that passes through the skin and is absorbed by the vein. The laser causes the vein to break up and be absorbed by the body.

How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments required depends on the person and the affected area. However, the majority of the treated veins will be gone within 2 to 3 treatments. These treatments are administered in 3 to 4 week intervals. Additional treatments may be necessary to reach the maximum and long-term effects. Patients should understand that new veins may appear with time and require additional treatments.

Is Laser Vein Removal safe?

Yes, laser therapy is safe. Laser Vein Removal has few possible complications. Some of the common side effects can include redness, bruising, and discomfort around the area that has been treated. None of these effects are dangerous and will heal over time. One important suggestion to promote healing is to limit sun exposure, which will greatly minimize the risk of complications.

Will there be any downtime?

No. After Laser Vein Removal, you can return to all your normal activities. However, patients should not exercise for a couple of days following the procedure.

What are the benefits of Laser Vein Removal over other treatments?

Laser Vein Removal has two main benefits over other types of therapies: it is faster and there is no downtime with this method.

What can be expected post-treatment?

After the treatment, they may be some redness around the area that was treated, and a slight sensation similar to the feeling of sunburn may occur. These reactions will disappear in a few days. A cold compress is recommended to be applied to the treated area.

Who are candidates for Laser Vein Removal?

Laser vein removal is recommended for patients with spider veins on the legs or face. Patients with either light or dark skin can benefit from this procedure.

Who should avoid Laser Vein Removal?

Patients who are prescribed high doses of blood- thinners are not good candidates for this treatment. People who have bleeding disorders, dark suntans, or who are currently taking photosensitizing medication should avoid having laser vein removal.

How does the treatment feel?

There is little discomfort reported from patients who have undergone laser vein removal. It is typically compared to the feeling of a mild burning sensation similar to a slight sunburn.

What are the alternative treatments?

Sclerotherapy is an alternative to laser vein removal.  Sclerotherapy is a procedure whereby a solution is injected into a targeted area of skin to reduce spider veins. Sclerotherapy treatment requires anywhere from 5 to 40 injections per treatment.

Is additional treatment necessary?

Treatment varies with each person and the area requiring treatment. The number of treatments necessary to resolve the issue depends on the size of the veins, the location of the veins, and the patient’s ability to heal.

Instructions for before treatment:

Patients should avoid sun tanning or any tanning products for at least four weeks before treatment. Discontinue the use of Accutane® and Retin-A® for at least six weeks before treatment. Blood thinners such as aspirin should also be avoided for at least three days before treatment. The area to be treated should be shaved prior to treatment.

Instructions for after treatment:

Over-the-counter pain medication may be taken, if needed. A cool compress is also helpful in reducing swelling, redness and pain. Patients should not massage the treated area, but should focus on keeping it elevated as much as possible the day after treatment. Direct sunlight should also be avoided for at least two weeks after treatment.

While cosmetic improvement is often a factor in using laser vein removal to treat spider veins, Vein & Skin Laser Center understands that relief from pain is often the primary concern for patients in Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Our physicians use advanced diagnostic techniques to choose the best non-surgical or minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of spider veins and other venous disorders to ensure that both aesthetic concerns and painful symptoms are addressed simultaneously, effectively and safely.
